It all depends on the condition of your carpet. Extra cleaning time is required for carpets that are heavily soiled or stained. Turning on the fan and air-conditioning helps with drying. It is also perfectly fine for you to walk on your carpet immediately after cleaning in your bare feet or using house slippers.
This reappearance is common and is caused by a process called ‘wicking’. This happens when a stain that has dried deep down at the base of your carpet resurfaces when the spot is re-moisturized during cleaning. It depends on the type of rug you use. We have a lot of successes removing pet odour completely from specific kinds of rugs and in most cases do significantly lighten them even if total odour removal is not possible.
Here’s the science bit: Pet urine can easily soak right through to the backing of a rug. The acidic stain becomes alkaline as it comes into contact with air. When this chemical reaction takes place, the urine transforms into urea crystals. These urea crystals remain in the backing where they are held by the glue that holds the rug together. It is the bacteria living off the urea crystals that cause the odour.
It is on average a 4 – 6 hours wait, depending on the degree of soiling. You can turn on the fan or air-conditioning to aid the drying. In areas with high humidity, it will take an additional 1-2 hours to dry completely.
